Physiotherapy FAQs

 In Physiotherapy

So far, you’ve been lucky enough to avoid the kind of ailments that call for physiotherapy, but now you’re wondering whether physiotherapy can help you or someone close to you. You have questions, and you’re not the first to have asked them. We run through the basic questions we’re often asked about physiotherapy. Perhaps, you’ll find what you’re looking for right here!

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists use evidence-based methods to help people to recover from or prevent injuries or problems that affect their mobility. Your physiotherapist will work with you to develop a plan that includes tips, tricks, and exercises you can do at home. He or she will also provide in-office treatments.

Must a Doctor Refer Me to a Physical Therapist?

Although doctors often do refer their patients to us, you are welcome to contact us without visiting a doctor first. However, if you’re hoping that your medical insurance will cover physiotherapy, you may need a referral from a physician. Check with your insurance provider to find out whether you are covered without a referral.

What Clothes Should I Wear When Going for an Appointment?

You don’t need full gym gear for physiotherapy, but you will be required to move around. Choose comfortable clothing that won’t restrict movement. If you’re visiting us during your workday, pack a pair of shorts or tracksuit pants to wear during your appointment.

Why do People Visit Physiotherapists?

Physiotherapy can help with a wide range of problems. However, we most often see patients who need help with:

  • Recovery from injuries that involve pain and inflammation.
  • Reducing the negative impacts of arthritis.
  • Recovery after accidents or surgeries.
  • Recovering or maintaining mobility after being diagnosed with neurological disorders.
  • Respiratory problems that make breathing difficult.
  • Headaches, backaches and chronic pain.

What Will my Physiotherapy Treatment Consist of?

The precise treatment that we will recommend will depend on your initial assessment appointment. At this time, we will ask you questions about your medical history, examine you, and ask you to perform certain movements.

In most instances, we will help you with in-office treatments such as manual therapies, ultrasound treatments, etc. You will also be given a personalized exercise program that’s designed to help you to recover more quickly.

Is Physiotherapy Mainstream?

Physiotherapy is not “alternative medicine.” The medical profession accepts physiotherapy as a bona-fide and scientific approach to recovery. A physiotherapist is a highly-qualified medical professional with a university degree.  The techniques used are all supported by scientific research.

What Does a First Visit to Physiotherapist Entail?

There is no need to feel nervous about your first physiotherapy appointment. Here’s what you should expect:

  • A talk with the physiotherapist in which you explain the history of your illness or injury.
  • An examination much like that you’d get from a regular GP.
  • The physiotherapist’s conclusions based on the above two steps.
  • An explanation of your treatment plan.
