It’s a question we can only hazard an answer to after seeing you for the first time. After all, physiotherapists see people who need help with recovering from all kinds of injuries, illnesses, and traumas.
You may be learning to walk again after suffering a stroke, or you could be a go-getter sportsperson with a torn hamstring. You could be a twelve-year old with a spinal condition that could turn nasty without our help, or you could be an elderly person who has recently suffered a fall.
Clearly, these people all need different courses of treatment and even when two people have a superficially similar injury, they may need different amounts of time, different treatments, and different treatment frequencies to recover.
When Can We Tell You How Many Physio Sessions You Need?
With so many individual variables coming into play, it’s difficult to be precise about how many sessions you’ll need even once we have assessed your condition. But, after your initial assessment appointment, we can give you a good estimate based on our experience with patients who have problems like yours.
One thing that you can be certain of: we will never suggest unnecessary appointments. We are here to help you recover, not to “sell” treatments.
We’ll Let You DIY as Much as Possible
While we could insist that we’re present whenever you do your physiotherapy exercises, we seldom do. The only time we’d say we need to be present when patients practice the exercises we’ve prescribed is when we’re concerned that they haven’t mastered them sufficiently well to perform them without injuring themselves.
However, this does place a lot of the responsibility for your recovery in your hands. If you are disciplined about performing your physiotherapy exercises when we aren’t there to watch, you’ll need fewer sessions with a physiotherapist because you’ll recover faster.
Your exercise program will never be overly demanding. We usually ask people to perform a set of exercises that takes only a few minutes to complete. We’ll ask you to do these exercises once, twice, or three times a day.
The difference they can make to your recovery is remarkable – but a lot of people continue to need our help long after they should have improved because they failed to comply with their self-help program.
Some Treatments Must Take Place In-Office
Although physiotherapists may be best known as people who tell you to do exercises, it’s not the limit of our treatments. We use scientifically proven methods to reduce pain and inflammation, increase range of movement and promote healing.
These could range from massage, to heat treatments or body alignment techniques. Additional treatments using highly specialized equipment may be appropriate depending on your situation. Whatever that may be, you may be sure that we’ll only ask you to make an in-office appointment because our physiotherapists believe it is necessary to your recovery.
Visit us For Your Assessment
The question of how many physiotherapy sessions you’ll need isn’t easily answered without knowing how we might help you. An initial assessment allows us to choose an appropriate strategy. We present this to you in detail, and we will be able to give you an estimated number of visits required.
So, to begin with, physiotherapy only requires one visit. After that, it’s up to you. Why not check it out? Your recovery is worth the effort!
